Shakuntala Devi

1929–2013 · Mental calculation

Known as the 'Human Computer' for her extraordinary feats of mental arithmetic. In 1980 at Imperial College London she correctly multiplied two randomly chosen 13-digit numbers in 28 seconds, a performance recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records. She also wrote popular books making mathematics accessible.
