Possession Impact Calculator

Turn possession time and passes into possession share and passing tempo. Note: more possession does not guarantee more goals — see the FAQ.

possession % = team seconds / total seconds ; passes per possession-minute

Frequently asked questions

Does more possession win games?

Not reliably. Plenty of teams win with less of the ball by defending well and counter-attacking. Possession is control, not a guarantee of goals, which is why the result says so.

What does passing tempo tell me?

How quickly a team moves the ball while in control. A high tempo can mean slick, incisive play, or sometimes sterile sideways passing that goes nowhere.

How is possession measured?

Usually as the share of time a team has the ball, or the share of passes. This calculator uses possession time, then adds a passes-per-minute tempo read.

Why can high possession be a trap?

Because possession without penetration just keeps the ball away from your own goal without threatening the other. Quality of possession matters more than quantity.

Who favours high possession?

Teams built around control and patient build-up. Others deliberately cede possession to spring fast breaks, and both can be valid winning styles.
