Baudhayana
c. 800 BCE · Geometry
Vedic priest and author of the Baudhayana Shulba Sutra, the oldest surviving text on geometry. It contains an early statement of what is now called the Pythagorean theorem — centuries before Pythagoras — and a remarkably accurate approximation of the square root of 2, developed for the precise construction of sacrificial altars.
